Nauru refugee camp doctor removed as pressure on Australia mount

Chief medical officer Nicole Montana kicked off Nauru

"These are practical, reasonable and responsible measures to address the chaotic, confusing and inconsistent medical transfer process that now exists for asylum seeker and refugee children", Mr Neumann said.

Nicole Montana was due to fly home today, having already been replaced.

Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he would support refugee resettlement from Nauru to New Zealand if legislation passed to close "backdoor" entry to Australia, according to Sky News Australia.

"These are practical, reasonable and responsible measures to address the chaotic, confusing and inconsistent medical transfer process that now exists for asylum seeker and refugee children", Mr Neumann said.

Labor on Tuesday said it would introduce legislation aimed at ensuring sick refugee children at the regional processing centre in Nauru were brought to Australia for medical purposes if necessary.

Three Liberal backbenchers have taken the extraordinary step of demanding Prime Minister Scott Morrison evacuate children and their families from the island.

The global group Medicins Sans Frontieres was told earlier this month by officials in Nauru that mental health services must cease and their presence was no longer welcomed.

But he said it would be based on the the condition they were not permitted to ever travel to Australia.

On Wednesday, the Coalition government mulled on NZ PM Jacinda Ardern's offer more than a year ago, saying the deal could work if the refugees could be stopped from entering the country, even under a tourist or business visa. With public criticism of Australia's offshore detention system mounting, there have been breakouts on both sides of politics, with a number of parliamentarians increasingly concerned about conditions in offshore detention following a spate of medical transfers to Australia.

Nearly 6000 doctors sign open letter to Prime Minister to remove children from the Nauru processing centre.

Sky News understood the Australian government plans to call for a vote this week on the legislation.

"I have been meeting with those colleagues as have the relevant ministers and we have been acting on those issues", Mr Morrison told reporters on Tuesday.

Morrison told reporters that there was now no majority support for the bill.

Labor, the Greens and a slew of crossbenchers had vowed to oppose the bill in the Senate, meaning it was sure to fail and was never put to a vote.

"There is no support for that bill at present", he said.

The forum, moderated by Refugee Council of Australia president Phil Glendenning, focused on the nearly 100 children on Nauru, many of whom are at risk from "resignation syndrome" and have given up on life.

"Our offer still stands. Who Australia allows across their borders is a matter for the Australian government", New Zealand Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway told AAP.
