Paul Allen: Microsoft co-founder dead at 65

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen dies at 65

His sister Jody said in a statement to CNBC, he was "a remarkable individual on every level".

Allen had revealed earlier this month that he had begun undergoing treatment for the blood cancer, which he previously overcame nine years ago.

However, citing an anonymous source, The Oregonian's John Canzano reported on Monday that there was a chance Jody Allen might sell the Trail Blazers but retain ownership of the Seahawks because she's a Seahawks fan, and "nobody who knows her thinks she'd be interested in wanting to run an National Basketball Association franchise on a daily basis".

Music-lover Allen had a list of high-profile friends in the entertainment business, including U2 singer Bono, but preferred to avoid the limelight at his compound on Mercer Island, across Lake Washington from Seattle, where he grew up.

After the National Football League stopped Behring from moving the team, community leaders persuaded Allen to buy the team and help build a new stadium to make them stable.

One of the world's wealthiest billionaires, Allen also founded Stratolaunch Systems, which built the world's largest plane designed as a colossal rocket-launching aircraft touted as the future of space travel.

Allen's purchase of the Seahawks from previous owner Ken Behring saved the team from what had seemed like a near-certain relocation.

Allen was worth over $20 billion at the time of his death. Kenneth Allen and Edna "Faye" Gardner left Oklahoma after World War II and settled in Seattle, where they would eventually raise their family.

"All of us who had the honor of working with Paul feel inexpressible loss today", said a statement by Vulcan, the investment firm that managed his operations.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella hailed Allen's contributions to the tech giant. "This isn't the time to deal in those specifics as we focus on Paul's family". He told The Associated Press that "for a true fan of the game, this is a dream come true". Allen officially resigned from his position on the Microsoft board of directors in November 2000 but was asked to consult as a senior strategy advisor to the company's executives. He has also backed research into nuclear-fusion power.

After purchasing the NBA's Trail Blazers in 1988, Allen bought the Seahawks in 1996 from Ken Behring, who was threatening to move the team to Southern California.

Allen's film production company, Vulcan Productions produced movies such as Far From Heaven, Girl Rising, This Emotional Life, and Unseen Enemy. He also signed the Giving Pledge in 2010, the signatories of which promised to give at least half of their fortunes to philanthropic causes. Allen could sometimes be seen at games or chatting in the locker room with players.
