Protesters gather on Gaza frontier, Israeli fire wounds 77

IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot at Glilot military base near Tel Aviv

Friday's demonstration follows increased rhetoric between Hamas and Israel.

The latest deployment is considered as the largest seen there since the 2014 Israeli offensive on the coastal sliver of land, which left more than 2,200 Palestinians dead.

Israeli soldiers first sent a surveillance drone to take a look at the risky airmail, before a sharpshooter popped enough of the balloons to send the bomb dropping harmlessly into an empty field.

Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad militant group quickly denied firing the rockets.

The decision was taken after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his cabinet meeting earlier Wednesday and pledged to take "very strong action" if Palestinian "attacks" continued.

Protests continue on the Israel-Gaza border; Trey Yingst reports from the scene.

In fact, Mr. Abbas did not mentioned even once the direct hit on a family home in southern Israel city by a terrorist-fired GRAD missile.

In one protest east of Rafah, Israeli forces killed three local residents with live ammunition: Ahmad Abu Luli, 30, who was shot in the hip; 'Abdallah Qutati, 22, a paramedic who was shot in the chest; and 'Ali Al-'Alul, 54, who was also shot in the chest.

The large Israeli military deployment on Friday came a day after Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nations envoy for the Middle East, said "we remain on the brink of another potentially devastating conflict, a conflict that nobody claims to want, but a conflict that needs much more than just words to prevent".

"Palestinian factions are demanding an end to the Israeli blockade that strangled life and business in Gaza", the official told Reuters.

Prior to that, the Palestinian Health Ministry stated that over 50 Palestinians have been wounded in clashes with the Israeli military on the Gaza Strip border over the past 24 hours.

Tensions continue in the occupied Palestinian territories in the wake of US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel's so-called capital.

The escalation of violence in Gaza is "a warning to all how close to the brink of war the situation is", Guterres pointed out at the time.
