Purdue Absolutely Mashed Ohio State To End The Buckeyes Undefeated Season

Purdue Ohio State Football Buckeyes

Purdue (4-3, 3-1) always figured to be a risky opponent.

Boilermakers: This is easily the biggest win of Brohm's brief tenure, and now the Boilermakers head into the most challenging part of their schedule with momentum and visions of a Big Ten West title. Recent history at Ross-Ade hasn't been kind to the Buckeyes, either.

Buckeyes: This wasn't just a loss.

The Boilermakers gashed the Buckeye defense for 5.6 yards per rush, and another 378 yards through the air. Knox repeated the trick minutes later, again going 40 yards without a single Buckeye defender in sight.

Haskins wound up 49 of 73, shattering the school records in both categories, and had 470 yards and two touchdowns and an interception.

Nelson, a defensive end, made it 23-0 Hawkeyes late in the third quarter by falling on a botched handoff from backup quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome in the end zone.

Nearly one year ago, Ohio State faced an important conference road contest when it went to Iowa City to face the three-touchdown underdog Hawkeyes, looking for its eighth win of the season and to keep its playoff hopes alive.

The Buckeyes got only six points from four trips inside the Purdue 20. The offense got in the act late in the first quarter with its best drive all season, marching 98 yards on 15 plays, eating up 7:09 on the clock for the first score of the game.

Ohio State has a neutral site nonconference win against TCU and a road win at Penn State, and it could further impress the committee with a win at Michigan State on November 10 and a home win over rival Michigan on November 24, plus the Big Ten title.

Ohio State's defense pressured David Blough at times, but when it didn't, the Buckeyes got picked apart. Purdue hit paydirt on the next play on a Rondale Moore nine-yard TD catch.

Even when the Buckeyes did stop Purdue, things often went south.

Knox added a second long touchdown later in the fourth quarter, making a man miss in the backfield and sprinting 40 yards untouched after that for his third touchdown of the game.

Right at the end of the first half, Purdue was set up for a 30-yard field goal that would have given them a seven-point lead over Ohio State.

Dre'Mont Jones was called for roughing Blough on what would have been a three-and-out early in the fourth quarter.

"It was fantastic", running back D.J. Knox said of the scene.

The game was expected to be a shootout between two explosive offenses against two shaky defenses. Jeff Brohm sent the field goal team on to the field, but holder Joe Schopper took off running and lumbered four yards for a first down. With Purdue up 21-6, the Boilers stopped a fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line, sniffing out a swing pass attempt that landed incomplete. The Boilermakers converted a second-and-25, and Blough then threw to Isaac Zico for a 13-yard touchdown. The Boilermakers dominated the first half by playing keep away. To this point, Ohio State has avoided such a fate as it's outscored IN and Minnesota 79-40 the last two weeks.

Purdue quickly drove deep into Ohio State territory in the final minute of the second quarter.

He sent his field-goal unit out onto the field, but instead of going for three he called for a fake that worked to perfection.

Anthony Nelson added a TD on a fumble recovery for the Hawkeyes (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten), whose defense held the Terrapins to just 115 yards and seven first downs on a day when wind gusts topped 40 miles per hour.
