Russian woman charged with USA election-meddling

The agencies say the "ongoing campaigns" could take many forms.

The agencies said they now do not have any evidence that voting systems have been disrupted or compromised in ways that could result in changing vote counts or hampering the ability to tally votes in the midterms, which are fewer than 20 days away.

Khusyaynova allegedly managed the financing of Project Lakhta operations, including foreign influence activities directed at the United States.

USA law enforcement and intelligence agencies said on Friday they remain concerned about attempts by Russia, China, Iran and other foreign groups to interfere with the November 6 congressional elections, as well as the presidential election in 2020.

Using social media and other avenues, the conspiracy participants waged "information warfare against the United States", attempting to sow distrust of candidates for USA political office and the US political system, according to the complaint.

Federal prosecutors in Virginia said Khusyaynova's work was part of an effort orchestrated by Yevgeniy Prigozhin, an oligarch known as "Putin's chef" who has already been charged for interference in the 2016 election.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Justice Department, FBI and Department of Homeland Security said they do not have any evidence that anyone went far enough to prevent voting or change vote counts. Trump also signed an executive order last month authorizing additional sanctions against countries or people who interfere in USA elections, though some lawmakers say the measure does not go far enough. Senior officials have said that while foreign actors continue to engage in activities targeting social media and election systems, they have not seen the level of activity that they witnessed in 2016.

But Trump recently accused China of meddling in the midterms, and Vice President Mike Pence said in a speech this month that Russia's actions in 2016 pale in comparison to the covert and overt activities China is taking to interfere in the USA midterm elections and counter Trump's tough trade policies against Beijing.
