Saudi Arabia admits Jamal Khashoggi killed in Istanbul consulate: State media

Khashoggi died in fight at consulate, admits Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's leaders had promised the U.S.to reveal within days what happened to Khashoggi, who lived in the US and wrote for the Washington Post, after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to retrieve a document for his wedding.

"We will continue to closely follow the worldwide investigations into this tragic incident and advocate for justice that is timely, transparent, and in accordance with all due process", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

"The Secretary-General stresses the need for a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Khashoggi's death and full accountability for those responsible", the spokesman said.

The disappearance of Khashoggi, a US resident and Washington Post columnist, strained relations between Saudi Arabia and Western allies.

"We will continue to closely follow the worldwide investigations into this tragic incident and advocate for justice that is timely, transparent, and in accordance with all due process", the statement reads.

Human rights groups like Amnesty International separately have been calling for a United Nations investigation into Khashoggi's killing.

"To say that I am skeptical of the new Saudi narrative about Mr Khashoggi is an understatement", the Republican senator tweeted.

Khashoggi, who contributed opinion pieces to The Washington Post, visited the consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to sort out marriage paperwork, but his fiancee saw nothing more of him after he entered.

Turkish police are searching a forest on the outskirts of Istanbul and a city near the Sea of Marmara for the remains of Khashoggi more than two weeks after he vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, two senior Turkish officials told Reuters.

The disappearance of Khashoggi has provoked global criticism of Saudi Arabia's de-facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and convulsed the kingdom as it struggles to respond to increasing worldwide pressure to explain the journalist's fate.

Saudi Arabia also announced that 18 people had been arrested in the ongoing probe.

Turkish officials told The New York Times that it has audio evidence which proves Khashoggi was tortured, killed and subsequently dismembered by a hit team of Saudi agents. Saudi Arabia denies all such allegations, claiming that Khashoggi left the consulate alive on the same day and vowing to provide all possible assistance to the investigation. Authorities said 18 Saudi suspects were in custody and intelligence officials had been fired.

"Saudi Arabia has been a great ally".

"They must have thought they could somehow get away with it because the Trump administration wouldn't hold them to account", Sawers said.

Khashoggi's death showed 'just how risky it is to have people acting with a sense that they have impunity in their relationship with United States, ' he said.

The president added that there were "other things" the USA could do that wouldn't involve jeopardizing economic deals with Saudi Arabia.

Government-run state media said a fight broke out between the journalist and people he met there.

Sawers said he was basing his judgment on what happened to Khashoggi on British government sources and Turkish intelligence, which he knows to be "professional" and "thorough".
