Saudi journalist Khashoggi decapitated after fingers cut off

U.S. secretary of state to travel to Turkey on Wednesday - State Department

The Saudis have strongly denied those allegations, but United States media outlets have reported they will acknowledge he was killed in a botched interrogation.

This follows reports last night that Saudi Arabia is preparing to admit that the 59-year-old Washington Post journalist was killed inside the Istanbul consulate - but that it was an accident.

The source said the timing of the two events is no accident.

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the growing condemnation of Saudi Arabia in an interview with the Associated Press on Tuesday.

It's not clear whether the public will ever get any evidence of what happened beyond Saudi Arabia's word.

Khashoggi, an outspoken critic of the current royals in Riyadh, disappeared two weeks ago after he entered a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was decapitated on October 2 inside his country's consulate in Istanbul after torture during which his fingers were cut off, according to media reports citing an audio recording of the brutal execution.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey should "reveal everything" they know about Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance, a top United Nations human rights official has said while demanding a "thorough and impartial" probe into the whereabouts of the dissident Saudi journalist.

"It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers - who knows", Mr. Trump told reporters.

"We just went through that with Justice Kavanaugh and he was innocent all the way as far as I'm concerned", Trump told the AP. I mean, who knows? "We're going to try getting to the bottom of it very soon, but his was a flat denial".

As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrives in Ankara to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, new reports detail the gruesome alleged murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Protection from national jurisdictions is bestowed on consular premises and officials by treaties such as the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

"He was with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during the call, and told me that he has already started, and will rapidly expand, a full and complete investigation into this matter".

Mr. Trump spoke with King Salman of Saudi Arabia on Monday morning in a 20-minute phone call.

Turkish sources allege he was killed by a 15-strong team of Saudi agents but Riyadh insisted earlier that he left the consulate unharmed. Saudi officials have denied any involvement but have not provided an explanation of what might have happened.

Despite Western concerns about Saudi Arabia's human rights record, Trump still says he is unwilling to pull out of weapons sales agreements with Riyadh. USA intelligence officials have reported they are certain the interference took place in an effort to hurt Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Trump last week vowed to uncover the truth about what happened to Khashoggi and promised "severe punishment" for those responsible.

MBS, who has enjoyed a close relationship with the Trump administration, has painted himself as the face of a new, vibrant Saudi Arabia, diversifying its economy away from reliance on oil and making some social changes.

Saudi Arabia has responded to Western statements by saying it would retaliate against any pressure or economic sanctions "with greater action", and Arab allies rallied to support it.
