Saudi official provides yet another version of Khashoggi's death

Erdogan, Trump hold phone conversation on Khashoggi

The report by pro-Government daily Yeni Safak alleges the Crown Prince telephoned the Washington Post columnist moments before he was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this month.

A leading Republican U.S. senator said he believed the crown prince was behind the killing, adding that the Saudis had lost all credibility in their explanations of his death.

Three European powers - Germany, Britain and France - pressed Riyadh to provide facts, and Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany would not export arms to Saudi Arabia while uncertainty over Khashoggi's fate persisted.

"We seek justice and this will be revealed in all its naked truth, not through some ordinary steps but in all its naked truth", Erdogan said on Sunday, according to the semiofficial Anadolu news agency. In a detailed account, the official said members of the 15-man Saudi team threatened to drug and kidnap Khashoggi and had "killed him in a chokehold" when he resisted.

The announcement on Sunday by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he will "go into detail" about the Khashoggi case in a speech in parliament heightened hopes for some clarity in a case that has been shrouded in mystery, conflicting accounts and shocking allegations since Khashoggi, a critic of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, disappeared after entering the consulate on Oct 2.

Hatice Cengiz, a Turkish national, waited for Khashoggi outside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, where he was to get papers for their planned marriage.

Riyadh, after announcing an internal investigation, claimed to have detained 18 people in connection with the case and freely admitted that Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate in what Saudi officials described as a "fist fight", cited by the BBC.

"This was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding the authorities and responsibilities they had".

Trump said: "We'd like to find out where it is and what happened".

WAN-IFRA, in which The Globe and Mail is a member, condemned the "growing culture of impunity for crimes against journalists"; the Saudi officials presumably believed they would be protected by this.

However, he made it clear he believed the Crown Prince Mohammed directed the murder. "We feel their pain", Jubeir said in the interview. The president has raised the possibility of imposing sanctions but said halting an arms deal would "hurt us more than it would hurt them".

On Sunday, Britain, Germany and France issued a joint statement indicating that the Saudi explanation of Khashoggi's killing did not go far enough. "They made a mistake when they killed Jamal Khashoggi".

The crown prince has "now crossed a line and there has to be a punishment and a price paid for that", Corker said.

Khashoggi vanished after entering the consulate to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage.

As suspicion over his disappearance grew, Saudi authorities offered up a variety of freaky explanations, beginning with an assertion that he had left the consulate unharmed.

"They came back to Saudi Arabia; they filed a report to that effect".

"This is an aberration, this is a mistake, this is a criminal act, and those responsible for it will be punished", Jubeir added.
