Simona Halep kisses her French Open trophy

Sloane Stephens has qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore after it was confirmed Elina Svitolina will not play a tournament in the coming week.

Two spots remain open for the elite eight-player field, with Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova in prime position to qualify for the round-robin tournament that offers $7 million (£5.3m) in prize money.

Halep, who won her first major at this year's French Open, clinched the year-end top women's ranking on Monday but might be forced to pull out of the Kremlin Cup and the season-ending WTA Finals because of a herniated disk.

Reflecting on her achievement, the 27-year-old said that the feat is special for her as she had also won her first Grand Slam at Roland Garros, this year.

"Finishing the season as the world No. 1 past year was a huge honour for me", Halep said in a WTA news release.

A week away from the fifth and final WTA Finals in Singapore (it's moving to Shenzhen, China), Halep will be the only player to have appeared in all five editions. "I'm looking forward to meeting the unbelievable fans in Singapore, exploring the city, and competing against the best players of the season", Stephens was quoted by the WTA website as saying.

"It's really hard and I feel it every year, and I feel it more and more, to be honest".

"I never gave up, I tried every day to become better and better. I want just to be better and ready to play the tournament". So it's pretty stressful but somehow it's normal because injuries are pretty normal when you play at the highest level. I know it's not an easy injury.
