Storm Callum How will bad weather affect the UK

A storm that's been dubbed "Callum" will pass to northwest of the United Kingdom on Friday, bringing winds of up to 70mph and a prolonged downpour that will create hazardous conditions across the country. The highest speeds have been recorded on the Isles of Scilly in the early hours of Friday, while 60mph gales were recorded in Camborne in Cornwall and Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire.

"The strongest winds are expected across Northern Ireland during the morning".

-Spray and flooding is likely to lead to hard driving conditions and some road closures.

With the storm set to move north during Friday and Saturday, electricity distributor SP Energy Networks issued advice in case of power cuts in North Wales.

As part of the preparations, flood prevention measures were taken in a number of coastal areas.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather alert from 6am on Friday to 6pm on Saturday for South Wales and is warning of hazardous conditions.

This intense area of low-pressure will pass to the west of Ireland, northern England and Scotland during Friday.

Gary White, NRW's Duty Tactical Manager, said: "The current forecasted rain could cause flooding this week, especially in south and west Wales, and we are urging people to prepare themselves". There will also be heavy and persistent rain across a swathe of Britain leading to flooding and further disruption.

Yellow weather warnings for wind are in place for southwest Scotland, northwest and northeast England, southwest England, Wales, Yorkshire and Humber.

Rainfall totals could reach as high as 150mm over the Brecon Beacons, almost as high as the monthly average of 170mm for Wales.

Windsor, the scene of Friday's royal wedding, was expected to escape the worst of the storm.

The South East is expected to be blustery but stay "quite dry", with temperatures possibly reaching up to 24C (75F).
