A MS grandmother was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday after her 20-month-old granddaughter was found stabbed and burned inside an oven. She had not been formally charged as of Tuesday morning.
The relative found the toddler's body inside the oven.
It is not clear where the girl's parents were.
Williams says he won't release the names of the grandmother or the toddler until the filing of the murder charge is completed.
The woman has appeared in court and was given a $500,000 bond.
The state pathologist will have to determine if the child was dead prior to being placed into the oven or vice versa.
Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams, left, speaks to reporters at a news conference, Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, in Shaw, Miss., concerning a 20-month-old girl discovered dead in an oven.
Spokesman Warren Strain at the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said investigators are still probing for the cause of the girl's death, as well as when exactly the girl died and whether that was before she was placed in the oven. "It's trying for us to come upon a scene and see a victim such as this", Sheriff Kelvin Williams said to Metro.
Williams said a family member of the girl found her body and called police.
Williams said Jones was living in the house where the girl was found and no one else was there at the time the murder took place.
Jones was arrested when police arrived at the home and held overnight.
Williams said that he wasn't yet certain whether mental illness was a factor in the case. Williams said those toys had belonged to the child. 'This is one of the most frightful things I've seen in doing law enforcement. Terrie Robinson, now 33, pleaded guilty to putting her 3-year-old son Tristan in the oven and baking him to death in Washington County on March 2, 2011. It is not known if the baby died before or after she was put in the oven.
