Trader Joe's recalls salads over salmonella, listeria concerns

Trader Joe’s salads Mary’s Harvest wraps recalled for risk from corn

Possibly contaminated corn is behind a slew of recalls involving prepared salads sold by major retailers including Walmart, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.

GHSE, based in Florida, issued a recall the same night as ready-to-eat salads sold in Florida, Georgia, and SC, saying a corn ingredient possibly contaminated with salmonella and listeria was in the salads; soon after Taylor Farms Northwest, based in Washington, recalled its Port Carnitas Bowl, citing concerns that its tomatillos could be contaminated with salmonella and listeria.

5-oz. plastic clamshell packages containing "good & deLISH sante fe style salad with chicken", with "ENJOY BY" dates of 10/13/18 through 10/21/18 (inclusive). "44857" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The products subject to recall bear establishment numbers "17523A or P-17523A" and "45694 or P-45694" in the USDA mark of inspection.

About 738 pounds of Markestside Fiesta Salad with Steak meals in 15.25-ounce clear plastic clamshell packages with use-by dates between October 17 and October 20 are being recalled by GHSE LLC, a Green Cove Springs, Florida, establishment, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of any of these products.

Anyone who has the products should throw them away or return them to the store where they were purchased.

The recalled salads are sold across nine states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses and 450 deaths in the USA each year, with food the source of an overwhelming majority of the cases.

Salmonellosis can cause symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever, and it may last between four and seven days. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.

Eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns.

The corn supplier wasn't named, but other food products with the corn in it will likely be recalled as well, similar to when whey powder was linked to salmonella in July and led to a number of recalls, including Hungry-Man microwave dinners and Pepperidge Farms goldfish crackers. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and people with weakened immune systems can occur. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.
