Trump threatens Mexico over migrant caravan

Trump threatens to send army to US-Mexico border in migrant row

In a series of tweets, Trump blamed Democrats, leaders of Central American countries and "existing weak laws" for the influx.

The migrants are fleeing their country because of violence and poverty.

However, by the end of Thursday, Trump was also thanking Mexico for its efforts to contain the caravan.

Images of the migrants have prompted questions about whether the United States and Mexico will be able to strike a deal before the migrants reach the US' southern border.

Mexican officials said on Wednesday that those without papers would have to apply for refugee status or turn back. He also suggested they are ready to welcome the migrants with open arms because they are likely to vote for them in elections.

Three weeks before US midterm elections, Trump has seized on the caravan as a political victor for Republicans.

But that would probably enrage Trump, who appears to see Mexico's responsibility as stopping migrants from reaching the USA border by any means.

"I think it's important that we address development and I think that we're trying to do so with the United States", he said.

They eventually retreated to await the rest of the caravan. "But it would have much less impact on illegal border crossings between ports of entry".

"If that's the case, I don't think Mexico should be too anxious because in a sense ... it's the same kind of thing USA administrations have been doing for a long time", Leutert said.

On the Mexican side of a border bridge, they were met by a phalanx of police with riot shields. In recent years, Mexico has deported more Central American immigrants than the United States.

"Coordinated smuggling of large numbers of Central Americans is taking place daily here", Yuma Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony Porvaznik said in a written statement. "Anyone who wants to work in our country ... will have a work visa", he said. Before dawn Friday, the migrants made a decision to wait a few more hours for stragglers to arrive.

On Thursday, hundreds had walked to the river's edge where they sang the national anthems of Honduras and Guatemala.

Meanwhile, the rafts that normally ferry throngs of people across the river were carrying mostly merchandise and the raft operators said they had been warned by Mexican authorities not to carry people.

"Nobody is going to stop us!"

Mexico's peso weakened more than 1.5 percent against the dollar on Thursday, partly driven by Trump's comments, analysts said.

Trump also informed that if necessary, he would deploy the U.S. military to its Southern border with Mexico to halt the migrants.

On the new trade pact, some analysts don't think it's in any immediate danger.

Pompeo said he and Videgaray spoke of the importance of stopping the caravan before it reaches the US border.

The nonprofit also noted that Prensa Libra, a Guatemalan newspaper, "published an in-depth piece on the inner workings of an worldwide human smuggling network that moves migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh to the U.S".

If Trump pulls out of the trade deal or closes the border, there would be major economic implications for both countries.

"There have been these caravans through the years, but they become prominent because the president tweets about them", Selee said.

Mexico's President is holding emergency talks with the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
