Trump threatens to close U.S.-Mexico border over migrant caravan

Honduran migrants take part in a caravan towards the United States in Chiquimula Guatemala

U.S. President Donald Trump is lashing out over a caravan of Central American migrants trying to reach the United States, saying that if Mexico does not stop the effort, he will use the military to "CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER".

Trump has made migrant caravans a symbol of all that is wrong with US immigration policies.

"The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the Criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as President, than Trade or the USMCA", he tweeted, referring to a trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada.

His comments come as Trump has been urging fellow Republicans to make immigration a central issue in the closing weeks of their midterm election campaigns and blaming Democrats for his failure to pass immigration legislation in the GOP-controlled Congress.

Trump also said that if a solution is not found, it could upend the new trade deal negotiated between Mexico and the United States.

U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo is preparing to set off on a tour of the region. Trump said in one tweet Thursday.

The caravan has been growing steadily since it left the violent Honduran city of San Pedro Sula on Saturday. Dwindling in numbers along the way, the caravan totalled around 150 migrants by the time it reached Tijuana, at the United States border. Their objective now is to regroup and press on towards the border with Mexico. Some have said they are fleeing gang violence, and are traveling as a group for protection from criminal gangs.

"This caravan did not appear organically", a senior Trump administration official told journalists.

Whether any military deployment to the border will take place is unclear.

Frustrated by Congress' failure to fully fund his proposed wall at the border with Mexico, Mr Trump in April ordered National Guard personnel to help the Department of Homeland Security secure the border in four southwestern U.S. states.

But at least five U.S. states later refused to send the troops amid an outcry over a since-abandoned White House policy to separate migrant children from their parents at the border.
