Earlier Monday, the UN's Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Lisa Grande, told the BBC that unless the hostilities stop, Yemen would witness the worst starvation the world has known for 100 years.

It estimates that nearly 18 million people in the country do not have enough food, of whom more than eight million rely entirely on external aid for their next meal, and are therefore "at risk of dying". The Hodeidah port is a main entry point of about 70 per cent of Yemen's food, medicines, aid and fuel.

All its air, land and sea ports were now functioning, but fighting around Hodeidah was preventing WFP workers from reaching its 51,000 tonnes of wheat stocks at the Red Sea Mills facility - enough to feed 3.7 million people in northern and central Yemen for one month, Verhoosel said.
