Who wants to be a billionaire? Americans cross fingers for record lottery

It's not too late to jump on the lottery train - there's more than $2 billion up for grabs this week.

About 280 million tickets sold in Friday's drawing, none matching the winning mix of 7, 15, 23, 53, 65 and 70 to claim an estimated prize of $US1 billion ($1.4 billion).

Australian lotto players might not have such a big prize to play for but this week $60 million is up for garbs with $10 million in Tuesday's Oz Lotto, $30 million in the Powerball draw on Thursday and then $20 in Saturday's Superdraw.

The victor might opt for the cash prize of more than $270 million, from which the federal government will take 25% right away, and more later.

Since 2002, Mega Millions jackpots paid millions in prizes around eight times a year, sometimes even more than a dozen times. That's the largest jackpot in United States history.

"It's hard to overstate how exciting this is - but now it's really getting fun", said Gordon Medenica, lead director of the Mega Millions Group and director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming.

The next drawing will be Tuesday.

The nation's largest lottery jackpots have now rolled for a few months.

The next Powerball drawing is on Wednesday. Powerball has jumped since the last winner-a NY man who won on August 11. And on July 24, a California office of 11 co-workers shared a $543 million jackpot, which is the largest-ever prize won in a Mega Millions game. Powerball tickets are also $2 and have to be purchased by 9:45 p.m. ET in most states. The game is played in 44 states, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
