7-Eleven Speeds Customers Through With Mobile App

When a customer stops by one of these 7-Eleven stores, the "Scan & Pay" feature will automatically show up in the 7-Eleven Rewards app, which can be dowloaded on Android or iPhone smartphones.

After a three-month trial at its Irving, Texas headquarters store earlier this year, the retailer is testing the Scan & Pay service in 14 more stores in nearby Dallas with plans to expand it to more cities next year, said Gurmeet Singh, 7-Eleven's chief digital officer and chief information officer, adding the company built the prototype technology in house in just five weeks.

7-Eleven is making more moves to go cashierless - or at least give customers the option to. The idea for the store evolved from the Sam's Club Scan and Go app, which lets customers scan barcodes and pay directly within its app. The only products banned from cashier-less check-out are hot foods, lottery tickets, alcohol and tobacco.

"Americans are spending 30 billion hours waiting in line", Singh said in an interview. Also last week, Walmart revealed it's going to start letting customers avoid check-out lines by installing store employees in the aisles with credit-card readers to process purchases.

Since Amazon opened its first cashier-less Amazon Go store in late 2016, other retailers have been forced to grapple with how they'll compete with the convenience store of the future.

7-Eleven has a total of 67,000 locations in 17 countries worldwide, including almost 12,000 in North America. "We wanted to explore consumers' adoption of the technology: How do people learn about it?" Most of these respondents only bought one or two items, demonstrating that this "scan-and-go" technology could be helpful for quick trips. "How do they onboard, and how do they use it?" said Singh. "7-Eleven continues to redefine convenience by providing frictionless experiences for our customers with Scan & Pay".
