Abrams preparing new challenge in Georgia race — APNewsBreak

Judge rules on requests by Abrams campaign

Democrat Stacey Abrams ended her challenge to Republican Brian Kemp in the Georgia governor's race today, but pledged to fight the former secretary of state's "gross mismanagement" of the elections with a federal lawsuit.

The Abrams campaign claimed to have heard from 25,000 voters who ran into problems casting ballots, but the ones they have made public were able to vote, the Journal-Constitution reported.

Unlike Florida's Democrats, the Abrams campaign and her state party anticipated there would be barriers. "Now, the courts are doing what Brian Kemp's Secretary of State office refused to-upholding and protecting Georgia's rights and underlining the need for free and fair elections in a state that has suffered from an acute assault on voting rights engineered by none other than Secretary of State Brian Kemp". "But to watch an elected official who claims to represent the people in the state baldly pin his hopes for election on suppression of people's democratic right to vote has been truly appalling".

"Let's be clear. This is not a speech of concession".

"I will not concede because the erosion of our democracy is not right", Abrams said.

"But my assessment is the law now allows no further viable remedy", she concluded.

And ultimately Abrams, the former state House minority leader, came much closer than any Georgia Democrat has in decades of flipping either the governor's mansion or a Senate seat, despite some other high-profile efforts.

The announcement followed more than a week of post-election legal maneuvering from her campaign and allies as they sought to find enough votes to reduce Kemp's lead and force a December 4 runoff.

The close outcome - with Kemp avoiding a runoff by about 18,000 votes out of the almost 4 million that were cast - only fanned the complaints, with Democrats questioning his integrity and management of the balloting, and federal judges ordering changes to some counting procedures and plans.

But his record still gave Abrams' campaign a rallying cry even after the polls closed: "Count every vote", her campaign manager repeatedly told the television cameras, asserting that it was not yet time for Abrams to concede.

"I don't want to hold public office if I have to scheme my way into the post because the title of governor isn't almost as important as our shared title - voters", she said.

He said: "The election is over and hardworking Georgians are ready to move forward".

"In the coming days, we will be filing a major federal lawsuit against the state of Georgia for the gross mismanagement of this election and to protect future elections".

He went on to request that people in Georgia "stand with me in the days ahead".

Kemp declared himself governor-elect the next day and stepped down as Georgia's secretary of state, though thousands of absentee and provisional ballots remained uncounted.

Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams has recognised her rival's victory while announcing a plan to sue the state.

The Georgia secretary of state's office says county election officials are making progress on steps required to comply with federal judges' orders regarding absentee and provisional ballots. Abrams' campaign had contended there were potentially enough uncounted votes to force a runoff.

There were numerous accounts of voting difficulties in Georgia on Tuesday ― particularly for people of color. She also ordered the county to delay certification of its election results until those ballots have been counted.
