Android apps will update while you're using them

Android Dev Summit

Google released the Files Go app late past year and as the name suggests, it was meant for Android Go users. The API provides a couple of options to Android developers to push latest updates to their apps.

You'll have two options with this API; the first is a full-screen experience for critical updates when you expect the user to wait for the update to be applied immediately. Google has introduced new tools and features at Android Developer Summit. "[But] we've noticed that people across the globe are using it, no matter what type of mobile phone they have or how fast their internet connection is". The Android Developers blog says that the "update flow" can be customized to feel like part of the app (see GIF at the top of this article).

Google is giving Android developers a new application programming interface (API) that lets them force users into updating to the latest version of their app.

Cuthbertson noted that the In-App Updates API is still in testing with Android's early access partners. Though there's a catch, the app downloads the update when a user is using it, but it gets installed when you reopen the app.

Google is enabling users to have up-to-date Android apps all the time - without making any efforts to download them by visiting Google Play.

Google's new contract for Android vendors that want its core apps aims to bring the industry in line with Samsung's security patching model.

Along with the new updates API, Google official rolled out support for foldable devices on the eve of celebrating ten-years of Android.
