Apple launches iPhone X touchscreen replacement program

Apple’s new Mac Book Air is displayed during the company’s showcase of new products last month in New York

Apple has announced two new replacement programs that impact the iPhone X and the 13-inch MacBook Pro without a Touch Bar.

On some handsets the display "does not respond or responds intermittently" when touched, the company said, and in other cases it can react "even though it was not touched".

The iPhone X service program targets faulty display modules that may suffer from touch issues. As I wrote last week, a Nikkei report called demand for the iPhone XR "disappointing" and noted that Apple's suppliers have canceled plans to ramp up production of the device. Apple said it would service those affected drives. In August, there were three separate Reddit threads where customers reported and discussed the problems they were experiencing with the display on their iPhone X including "ghost touches" and intermittent functionality.

As with every fix program, Apple says you can take an affected iPhone X into an Apple Store, or an authorized Apple fix shop, or send it to Apple direct in the mail.

Taking note of the issue, Apple conducted an investigation of its own and has now concluded it was indeed true and has initiated a free replacement programme across the world for the affected iPhone X owners.

As for the Macbook Pro some models of the 13-inch laptop without a touch bar "have an issue that may result in data loss and failure of the drive", Apple said. The company will also email customers who have registered their devices with Apple to inform them about the program. Once again if you are sending the impacted MacBook Pro for service, backup your data as the drive will be erased as part of the service process.

This program does not affect 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar or older 13-inch MacBook Pro models.
