Aston Martin DBX SUV revealed as latest luxe truck

Aston Martin DBX prototype

Aston Martin has confirmed the name of its first SUV - DBX - and the commencement of prototype testing.

The profile gets a raked windshield, sloping roofline and a rising hemline - a prerequisite of all new coupe SUVs but Aston Martin has lent its unique touch with a deck-lid mounted spoiler that might remind you of some yesteryear Porsches.

Aston's big SUV will be built at the company's new plant in St Athan, Wales, developed in in three converted ex-Ministry of Defence hangars.

Despite speculation suggesting that the vehicle could be called the Varekai, Aston Martin has in fact confirmed that the auto will retain the name of the concept and be called the DBX.

Whether or not 007 will head for the woods in one in his next film is yet to be seen, but it would make for a great chase scene. It was being put through its paces on the Welsh Rally stage this year in the hands of the company's Chief Engineer, Matt Becker.

"Seeing a DBX development prototype in action is a momentous chapter in the story of our first SUV, for it is the moment it really comes alive", Aston Martin Lagonda president and CEO Andy Palmer said in a statement.

The British automaker is yet to announce engine specs for its new model, although the brand hopes to build the world's most powerful SUV, beating the 650-horsepower Lamborghini Urus.

While competitors have dumped off trucks in the Antarctic and the Middle Eastern desert, Aston Martin plans to prove it's building a true sports utility vehicle by going to the same sort of extremes, as well as for a lap around the Nurburgring race track. Naturally that means working on the car's multi-terrain and towing capabilities to ensure it works in all scenarios.

Aston Martin plan to test the Aston Martin DBX in the Arctic, the Middle East and on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, a fairly normal circuit for any production auto.
