At least 13 dead in California bar shooting

In this image made from aerial video police vehicles line a road in the vicinity of a shooting in Thousand Oaks California early Thursday Nov. 8 2018. Authorities say there were multiple injuries _ including one officer _ after a man opened fire in S

SKY2 was over the scene where a "College Country" night was being held, according to the bar's website. The official said the 29-year-old man deployed a smoke device and used a.45-caliber handgun when he opened fire. "We're very proud of who he is", one person said.

Survivors of the shooting said the gunman, dressed in black and wearing glasses, shot a security guard outside and then shot a young woman working at the counter just inside the door before opening fire on others.

The names of the victims were not immediately made public and people gathered at a nearby teen center waiting to learn the fate of loved ones. "They would go fishing up in the Sierras [Nevada mountains] together".

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said his department had several previous contacts with Long, including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him angry and acting irrationally.

Long was found dead in the Borderline Bar and Grill after 12 people were shot to death late on Wednesday. Ron Helus, who had rushed to the scene.

Numerous victims of the Las Vegas shooting had traveled to the country music festival from Southern California and several had connections to Thousand Oaks.

Friends and family mourn Ventura Country sheriff Sgt. Ron Helus, who was killed in a shooting at Borderline Bar. "It sounded like fireworks or something", he said. Then she thought it was a part of the song.

"It makes me think about going out now", King said. She dropped to the ground and crawled closer to the bar.

On some of the more popular nights at the country music dance hall, the crowd inside could be counted on to be in the hundreds.

"I remember when I was on the ground, seeing a girl getting trampled".

Tristan Appleby said he watched everything unfold from across the room. That shooting came days after a gunman was suspected of killing two black patrons of a Kentucky supermarket after he apparently failed to get inside a black church.

"Luckily, he didn't come my way", Appleby said. "A friend yelled 'Everybody down!' We were hiding behind tables trying to keep ourselves covered". He kept his eye on the gunman and when he paused to reload, he whispered to others that it was time to dash to the exit.

"(He) said to her, 'Hey I got to go handle a call. He doesn't know how a second mass shooting will affect him down the road.

Sarah Rose Desonwas at the club for her friend's 21st birthday.

"I fell to the floor and hid behind him and just tucked myself in his back", she said.

"I don't even remember in this blur, but I ran for my life", Deson said. She got out through the front entrance - the same one the shooter stormed through moments before -- tumbled down in the parking lot, got up and kept running.

"He's one of the reasons that I'm here right now", she said.

"I don't know what the hell happened". "I'm here for a reason".

Ian David Long began his adult life by enlisting in the Marines and getting married. The gunman exchanged gunfire with Helus, fatally wounding him.

The highway patrolman pulled Sgt Helus out, then waited as a Swat team and scores more officers arrived.

As shots were heard at a bar in a suburb of Thousands Oaks, California, a "hero" sheriff's sergeant responded by putting himself in the chaos to try to "save lives" but was shot by the gunman.

- Sheriff Dean said that Long was the victim in a January 2015 fight at a different bar in Thousand Oaks.

They have not yet confirmed any motive behind the attack.

Within 15-20 minutes, the scene was secure.
