Baby died in NSW and washed ashore in Queensland

Toddler found dead on Surfers Paradise Beach on Gold Coast

It comes as another baby girl, a four-month-old, died in a Brisbane hospital, with her death deemed suspicious.

A woman, 35, and a man, 37, are assisting police with their inquiries, with detectives from the Logan Child Protection and Investigation Unit as well as homicide detectives investigating the baby's death.

A couple has been taken into custody after a nine-month-old baby girl, who police say belonged to them, was found dead at Surfers Paradise beach on Queensland's Gold Coast in the early hours of this morning.

The baby was pronounced dead a short time after emergency services arrived at Surfers Paradise beach around 12.30am.

Expert police divers have begun the mission of searching for clues along the southern Gold Coast shoreline.

New South Wales Police confirmed on Tuesday night they will take over the investigation with help from the their Queensland counterparts.

'Anybody who does it homeless does it poorly, but if it is the family I believe it might be, they were in the worst position you could find yourself in, ' Rev Brooks said. I don't know how long for.

'They moved up here from down south and we gave them assistance with a different organisation that houses homeless people up here. We also provided them meals at lunch time'.

Both the man and his 23-year-old partner remain in QLD Police custody, but no charges have yet been laid.

Detective Insp Hogan confirmed the couple were known to police and were found at Broadbeach, a suburb around 10 minutes south of Surfers Paradise.

Speaking to reporters, Detective Inspector Marc Hogan, from Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch, described the baby's death as "a very tragic event". "It's a very sad situation", he said. Insp Hogan said it appeared the girl had been in the water, but there were no obvious wounds or injuries.

He said drugs weren't a factor in the parents' behaviour but he didn't rule out foul play.

A total of 13188 teenagers made their way to the first night of the annual end-of-year event and 22,000 graduates are expected to visit the popular holiday spot this week.
