Bill Gates Brandishes Poo To Showcase Reinvented Toilet Tech

Bill Gates shows a slide for an improved toilet system

"This small amount of feces could contain as many as 200 trillion rotavirus cells, 20 billion Shigella bacteria, and 100,000 parasitic worm eggs".

Web Desk: American billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has revealed that he spent money for a new toilet, his foundation has developed that functions even without sewers, reported India Times.

Holding a beaker of human excreta that, Gates said, contained as many as 200 trillion rotavirus cells, 20 billion Shigella bacteria, and 100,000 parasitic worm eggs, the Microsoft Corp. co-founder explained to a 400-strong crowd that new approaches for sterilizing human waste may help end nearly 500,000 infant deaths and save $233 billion annually in costs linked to diarrhea, cholera and other diseases caused by poor water, sanitation and hygiene.

Gates noted that the production of these toilets is in its initial phase, and that it will be at least a decade before reinvented toilets reach the masses in the poorest areas.

Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation is the world's biggest private philanthropy organization. "And I certainly couldn't think Melinda will have to ask me to refrain from talking about toilets and faecal sludge at the dinner table", he said.

Tuesday marked the first time Gates' Foundation has addressed an event in China, where President Xi Jinping is promoting a three-year "toilet revolution" to build or upgrade 64,000 public toilets by 2020, the report noted.

Twenty of the hi-tech toilets are on show at the expo - all of them taking a different approach to break down human waste and destroy germs, leaving behind clean water or solids that can be used as fertiliser or safely disposed outdoors.

Sanitation technology could save the lives of hundreds of thousands of childrenThomas Peter/ReutersHe declared that "today we are on the cusp of a sanitation revolution" and promised to unveil the most significant advances in the field for nearly 200 years.

According to Gates, "There is much more than one jar's worth in the environment and these pathogens cause diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid that kills almost 500,000 children under the age of five annually". It's no longer a question of if we can do it. "Could you process human waste without that sewer system?" As adoption of these multi-unit toilets increases, and costs decline, a new category of reinvented household toilets will become available, the Gates Foundation said.

The initial demand for the reinvented toilet will be in schools, apartment buildings and community toilet facilities, he added. He went to say that the situation will get worse if nothing is done about it.

The world's two largest economies have been engaged in a tit-for-tat trade war over tariffs for much of the year.
