Bound flight crash lands at airport in Guyana

Boeing jet crash lands at Guyana airport leaving six people injured

Fly Jamaica made a crash landing at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana this morning.

A Boeing jetliner carrying 126 people crash-landed at the airport in Guyana's capital Georgetown on Friday, injuring six people, the transport minister said.

'At this time, we believe that all 118 passengers and 8 crew members are safe.

The pilot reportedly claimed he started to experience technical issues with the hydraulics about 20 minutes into their flight and it forced him to turn around to its departure airport, according to Mr Patterson.

It comes two weeks after another Boeing jet crashed into the ocean off the coast of Jakarta, Indonesia, killing all 189 passengers and crew. The activated emergency chute can be seen at right along with the shattered right wing.

"Where the aircraft veered off is about the exact same place the Caribbean Airlines (plane did)... so fortunately for us on this occasion, the extension (of the runway) was there so they were able to utilise the extension", Patterson said, adding that investigations into the matter had already started.

It says Flight OJ256 "suffered an accident on landing", but offered no other details on the nature of the accident or possible injuries.

A spokesperson for Fly Jamaica said it is providing local assistance for its passengers and "will furhter release information as soon as it is available".

That included 82 Canadians, one American, 35 Guyanese, one Pakistani and one Trinidadian. The US National Transportation Safety Board was alerted.

The plane touched down at 2.53am, when it overshot the runway.
