Bryce Harper Turned Down $300 Million Contract From Nationals

Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals

So hefty, in fact, that it is expected to exceed the $300 million mark after he turned down a 10-year offer for that much from the Washington Nationals, the team he spent the first seven years of his career with. Teams do make token offers now and then, to save face or push the price up for rivals.

While Harper could be exploring other options, it's still possible he might return to the Nationals.

Boras tabbed Harper as a "generational" and "iconic" player - citing the Nationals' stark increase in attendance, television ratings and overall franchise value since Harper joined the team.

Without casting doubt on any of these reports, it's important to remember how quickly things can change in free-agency, especially as we approach the Winter Meetings, which will begin on December 9 in Harper's hometown of Las Vegas.

Teixeira signed an eight-year, $180 million contract with the Yankees before the 2009 season.

If Harper signs elsewhere, the Nationals' outfield next season will consist of Juan Soto in left field, Victor Robles in centre and Adam Eaton in right field, with former Gold Glove finalist Michael A. Taylor as a back-up in centre.

Bryce Harper's free agency - or, as agent Scott Boras termed at the GM Meetings today, "Harper's Bazaar" - will be one of the most fascinating storylines the 2018-19 offseason has to offer. "But I'm not comfortable with the statement that we're a better team without him". It's not hard to see why Phillies managing partner John Middleton, along with general manager Matt Klentak and president Andy MacPhail, would be willing to issue a historic contract to Harper to play his home games at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. The Nationals made him a qualifying offer last Friday.

Importantly for any future negotiations, Harper's deal would not be the largest in baseball history by average annual value. Max Scherzer got exactly $US30 million.
