Building collapses in Marseille, no word on casualties

France: Buildings collapse in Marseille

A building in the southern city of Marseille has been reduced to rubble on November 5, 2018.

A regional prefecture tweeted a photo that showed a pile of rubble and wooden beams.

Both buildings collapsed mid-morning on Monday on Rue d'Aubagne near the city's historic old port.

Local media reports said at least two passers-by were injured in the accident, and that authorities had destroyed a third building deemed to be unsafe. There was no immediate word on any casualties.

Local fire services said on Twitter that some 40 firefighters were on the scene, adding that rescuers are now combing the rubble with sniffer dogs looking for people who may be trapped.

According to Denormandie, around 10 people lived in the other one, which was undergoing building work.

Marseille fire services said two people who were in the street when the buildings collapsed were treated for light injuries. The government's housing minister, Julien Denormandie, said at the scene he couldn't rule out that people were trapped in the collapse.

Dozens of fire officers were at the scene and thick dust covered cars in the street.

As noted, one of the collapsed buildings were in disrepair, its inhabitants were evicted.

The public have been urged to avoid the area amid fears more buildings are at risk of collapse.
