Cahill cameo marks end of global career

Tim Cahill's Socceroos career finished with a whimper after Australia's all-time leading goalscorer's late cameo failed to produce a goal last night.

The 25-year-old, who would go on to score twice and assist another as Australia defeated Lebanon, chose to switch allegiances after failing to break into the Scotland national set-up.

He previously made his debut as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with South Korea last week.

The tie also marked Oz legend Tim Cahill's 108th and last cap for his country as he retired from global football.

"This is the only time you're going to see me cry", an emotional Cahill said at a post-match presentation.

Boyle's first goal came midway through the first stanza, lashing home from distance with a fortunate deflection taking the ball beyond the keeper.

"It's a special thing to be part of this group and part of the journey and part of what Arnie's creating". For the gaffer just to throw me on, he's given me a right good chance here and I want to grab it with two hands.

"You're Australian - be proud and wear this jersey with pride".

The big moment came on the 81st minute when Cahill took his place on the pitch to replace Aaron Mooy, and there was almost one more moment of magic to come.

"The lads were great out there and they've been great with me since I walked in the door".

"Tom Rogic, Mark Milligan and Robbie Kruse weren't here tonight and a couple of other boys I sent back home, but you look at the boys that I had on the bench as well, there is competition for places".

"A lot of credit goes to Arnie - he said do your best. don't try and do anything spectacular, just play your normal game and that's what I did".

"I promise I'll give everything for this country and if I'm stepping on that grass, I'll give everyone 100 per cent".
