Deadly salmonella outbreak from raw turkey grows - just in time for Thanksgiving

"The outbreak strain has been identified in samples taken from raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products and live turkeys", the CDC said in a statement on their website.

The CDC isn't telling people to stop eating turkey, but they are telling them to cook it thoroughly to at least 165 degrees. Of the 164 who have reportedly been made sick, 63 have been sick enough to check into the hospital. A single, common supplier of raw turkey products or of live turkeys has not been identified.

The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings.November 8, 2018 / 9:54 PM GMTBy Maggie FoxOne person has died and 164 have been made sick in an outbreak of salmonella linked to raw turkey, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. The outbreak has been going on for a year now, and 63 people have been sick enough to be hospitalized, the CDC said.

"We are still seeing new illnesses being reported on a weekly basis", Colin Basler, an epidemiologist with the CDC, said, according to The Associated Press. States with more than 10 cases are California, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, and Texas.

Firstly, invest in a thermometer, and make sure your turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165F before eating it. "Leftovers should be reheated to 165°F".

Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps, and they usually last four to seven days.

Don't spread germs from raw turkey around food preparation areas. Use a separate cutting board for raw turkey and other raw meats if possible. Most of the infections in this outbreak are susceptible to the antibiotics that are commonly used for treatment, so this resistance likely will not affect the choice of antibiotic used to treat most people.

The CDC says you should thaw your turkey in the refrigerator, in a sink of cold water that is changed every 30 minutes or in the microwave, but do not leave it on the counter. Also, 3 of the 85 ill people interviewed became sick after pets in their home ate raw ground turkey pet food.

No products have been recalled, and the agency hasn't recommended that people avoid turkey.
