Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Wins Election In a Landslide

Max Rose in October 2018

In her campaign platform, Ocasio-Cortez promotes universal job guarantees, fully funded public schools and universities, paid family and sick leave and housing as a human right.

Delmore said that many of these candidates adopted a new approach when campaigning for their various positions. Eight additional women will serve as governor in the U.S. There was a mix of people of all ages (including one girl genuinely thrilled to be spending her fourth birthday at the event), but overwhelmingly, the staff and volunteers and interns and supporters were young people, many of whom were engaging in politics for the first time and were so excited to be there, and so proud of the work they put in.

Last night, Donna Brazille, a strategist on CNN said a record number of 38 women of color will be serving in Congress (35 Democrats, three Republicans).

The "women's wave" included MA, where Democrat Ayanna Pressley was elected by Seventh District voters to be the first African-American woman to represent the state as a House member.

Women made history in the 2018 midterm elections. Men, by contrast, were more evenly divided in their vote.

Women also reached a record number in the United States Senate.

For the first time, the US Congress will have Muslim women - and two of them.

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated a little-known Republican opponent Tuesday in a congressional district representing part of New York City and, at 29, could become the youngest woman elected to Congress.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez last night made history as the youngest woman ever to be elected to Congress.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI became the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Sharice Davids defeated a Republican incumbent in Kansas to become the first openly LGBTQ woman to represent Kansas. Democrats celebrated the victory as Guerrero's win also meant a blue flip for the US island territory. He argued that the reason Democrats won a majority in the House is "not because they went far left", pointing to moderate candidates like Virginia's Abigail Spanberger, who unseated Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.) in a surprise victory.

In rapid succession, the House got its first two Muslim women: Minnesota's Ilhan Omar and Michigan's Rashida Tlaib. At least 95 women won seats in the House Wednesday morning, breaking a previous record of 84 women, NBC news reported.

Democrat Mike Espy, who will face Mississippi Republican Representative Cindy Hyde-Smith in a December runoff, could become the state's first black senator since Reconstruction.

In the Senate, female Democrats lost some important races.

Crowley was the No. 4 Democrat in the House and seen as a potential speaker one day.

And several of the female candidates broke records of their own. Women's issues are the economy, their education, their gun control.
