Democrats projected to win control of U.S. House

Shalala, Mucarsel-Powell flip Miami-Dade House seats to Democrats

Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday in a midterm setback for Donald Trump, but the United States president managed to avoid a feared "blue wave" as his Republican Party expanded its Senate majority after a polarizing, racially charged campaign.

Two issues more than any others were on voters' minds. But blue-collar voters and rural America embraced his aggressive talk and stances.

Democratic control of the House would break the GOP's monopoly on power in Washington and would nearly certainly lead to an onslaught of investigations of Trump's businesses and his administration.

Pelosi spoke as Democrats closed in on control of the House.

But the Democrats' edge is narrow.

Democrats are favoured by election forecasters to pick up the minimum of 23 House seats they need for a majority, which would enable them to stymie Trump's legislative agenda and investigate his administration.

Trump had noted the energy as he wrapped up a punishing schedule of rallies around the country that were meant to boost Republican candidates - and his own brand heading towards reelection in 2020.

For weeks, pollsters have been projecting that the Republicans would lose control of the House but maintain control of the Senate, the result being a divided Congress that would untether some of Trump's most vociferous political challengers. It wasn't clear what "leaks" he was referring to.

Fox was alone among US media outlets with the call. Among those expected were Trump's adult children, White House aides, Republican officials and presidential friends. Bill Nelson was trailing his challenger, current Republican Gov. Rick Scott, with most of the vote in.

Most of the 134 seats in the state House are in reliably red (greater Minnesota) or blue (Minneapolis and St. Paul) districts.

The party drew blood in IN, ousting one-term Democrat Joe Donnelly in a state that had been seen as a must-win for Democrats seeking to gain control of the upper chamber.

In suburban areas where key House races will be decided, voters skewed significantly toward Democrats by a almost 10-point margin. Not all were endangered, and those winning re-election included senators in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

For Democrats, the road to the 218-seat majority ran through the two dozen suburban districts Clinton won and through swaths of Trump country in the Rust Belt and heartland where voters backed the president two years ago. Democrats flipped seats in suburban districts outside of Washington, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago and Denver.

In Kansas, Democrat Sharice Davids beat a GOP incumbent to become the first gay Native American woman elected to the House. But in Kentucky, one of the top Democratic recruits, retired Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath, lost her bid to oust to three-term Rep. Andy Barr.

Analysts expect pressure on stocks if Democrats gain control of the House and a sharper downward reaction if they take the Senate too. In a tweet Wednesday, he referred to the election results as a "Big Victory".

The elections will mark the first nationwide vote since Russian Federation targeted state election systems in the 2016 USA presidential race but federal, state and local officials have sought to reassure the public that their voting systems are secure.

Some hurt worse than others.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good.

Voter turnout could be the highest for a midterm election in 50 years, experts predicted.

Still, about one-third of voters said Trump was not a factor in their votes.

Mr Trump's closing argument has largely focused on fear, warning, with no evidence, that a Democratic takeover would throw the country into chaos, spurring an influx of illegal immigration and a wave of crime.

How close are the elections going to be? He served as vice chairman of Trump's now-defunct commission on voter fraud. This will leave President Trump unable to pass key laws through the houses. It's called the midterm penalty for the president's party. A handful of others played outsized roles in their parties' midterm campaigns, though not as candidates, and were reluctant to telegraph their 2020 intentions before the 2018 fight was decided.

Republicans had another pickup opportunity in New Jersey, where Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, California Sen.

Said Warren: "This resistance began with women and it is being led by women tonight".
