Detained SA journalists "returned to hotel"

Quintal is the Africa Programme Coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Angela Quintal and Muthoki Mumo were permitted to return to their hotel in Dar es Salaam after being taken to an unknown location and subjected to "several hours of questioning", according to a news release.

The duo were arrested in their hotel room in Dar es Salaam and had their passports confiscated.

Muthoki Mumo and colleague Angela Quintal who were arrested yesterday in Tanzania have benn released and are now at the South African embassy in Tanzania.

CPJ believes that their colleagues' electronics might have been compromised since a tweet was sent from Quintal's account stating that they had been released but no one has contacted them directly from the organisation.


Former Mail & Guardian editor Angela Quintal is safe and is back at her hotel after being detained by Tanzanian authorities on Wednesday night, the Department of International Relations has confirmed. South Africa's High Cmmissioner to Tanzania Mr Thami Mseleku is set to meet them and discuss about the events and then engage with the country's authorities.

Two Committee to Protect Journalists staffers have been released from detention in Tanzania and have left the country, the organization announced Thursday.

"SOS we are being taken away for interrogation in Dar. Details and reasons for the detention are still not clear".

"We are concerned for the safety of our colleagues Angela Quintal and Muthoki Mumo, who were detained while legally visiting Tanzania", said Joel Simon, CPJ's executive director.

While they are no longer in custody, Mabaya said Tanzanian authorities have their passports.
