Donald Trump gives written answers to Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation

Separately, a report in the New York Times says that Mr Trump earlier this year requested that prosecutions be opened against his 2016 presidential opponent Hillary Clinton and the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

There were no responses to questions related to his time as president or whether Trump tried to impede an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election by firing FBI director James Comey. "Was that like your answers to Mr. Mueller's questions, or did you write this one yourself?" After Colbert pointed out the flaws in Trump's broader swipe against Schiff, he delighted in the fact that POTUS' insult gave him a free pass to say the word "shit" on air, and he made a decision to take full advantage of it.

A team of investigators led by Mr Mueller is looking into whether anyone from Mr Trump's campaign colluded in the effort.

"It has been our position from the outset that much of what has been asked raised serious constitutional issues and was beyond the scope of a legitimate inquiry". Since then, he had indicted or won guilty pleas from four former Trump campaign advisers and charged 12 Russian military officers with hacking Democratic emails that were later released and damaging Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.

Other questions may have touched on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and Roger Stone, a longtime Trump ally with ties to WikiLeaks, who also is under investigation. "There is no precedent, none, John, for this kind of appointment of someone who is essentially a lackey of the president", Blumenthal told CNN's John Berman.

The step is a milestone in a months-long negotiation between Trump's attorneys and special counsel Robert Mueller's team over whether and when the president would sit for an interview.

Trump's cooperation with Mueller's office has been seen as a compromise.

Trump told Fox News in an interview that aired Sunday that he was unlikely to answer questions about obstruction, saying, "I think we've wasted enough time on this witch hunt and the answer is probably, we're finished". But Justice Department leaders, including acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker - who now oversees the investigation and has spoken pejoratively of it in the past - would have to sign off on such a move, and it's far from clear that they would.

"The special counsel has a broad mandate to determine what took place during the campaign and to determine whether there has been an effort to obstruct that investigation", Griffin said.
