DR Congo: Death toll from Ebola outbreak exceeds 200

Two medical staff walk with a man in the Ebola treatment area of Bunia

However, more than 27,000 high-risk contacts have been successfully vaccinated, said Dr Kalenga.

THE latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is the country's worst ever, its health ministry has said.

Salama said the current Ebola outbreak is "arguably the most hard context that we've ever encountered", pointing to activities of two armed opposition groups in the region.

World Health Organization said there was a high risk of the outbreak spreading to other provinces in the DRC and other countries. However, eastern Congo is still suffering from outbreaks of Ebola, because the ongoing war between militant groups and the government over control of different regions makes it hard for health workers to battle the virus.

The ministry says the response teams "have faced threats, physical assaults, repeated destruction of their equipment, and kidnapping" since their arrival.

"No other epidemic in the world has been as complex as the one we are now experiencing", Congolese Health Minister Oly Ilunga said in a video message posted Sunday.

Over 28,000 people in the central African nation have received a vaccine.

The outbreak began shortly after the Congo's government declared an end to another outbreak in the west of the country in June and lauded those involved for managing to swiftly contain the spread of the disease.

The previous outbreak, contained in July, sickened 53 people and killed 33.

In addition to the deaths, there were more than 300 confirmed or probable cases.

Robert R. Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently suggested that it might be time to consider whether the outbreak can be fully stamped out, meaning the disease will may become endemic to the region.

Insecurity and community mistrust are the main challenges in the current outbreak of Ebola, reported Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO). "It is essential that barriers to implementing public health measures in populations that are displaced or unreachable because of security concerns be surmounted".
