Falcons sign ex-Raiders pass rusher Irvin

New Falcons DE Bruce Irvin says Patriots offered more money

Irvin, who officially was released by the Oakland Raiders on Monday and cleared waivers Tuesday, signed with his hometown Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday despite receiving better offers from the Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers. Now it's a reality. The 31-year-old was born in Atlanta and grew up in Georgia.

After news broke that Irvin was signing with his home-town team, Irvin took to Twitter to celebrate.

The Falcons (4-4) remain in playoff contention and will visit the Cleveland Browns (2-6-1) on Sunday. You can't put a price on the chance for me to play for my people and city!

Landing in Atlanta is a natural fit for Irvin for another reason.

It will be interesting to see if the Steelers eventually do add another pass rusher for this stretch run. He was Irvin's defensive coordinator with the Seahawks in 2013 and '14 who along with Norton and coach Pete Carroll made Irvin an every-down linebacker and eventually a rich free agent. "He is familiar with our scheme and we are familiar with his strengths, so we are looking forward to getting him on the field as soon as possible". Expect Irvin to play either right or left defensive end as a nickel rusher, complementing McKinley (the Falcons' sack leader with 5.5) and Beasley (1 sack). That's how much winning and competing in the ATL would mean to Irvin, though.

Irvin was struggling to produce in Oakland with 3.0 sacks and six tackles in eight games this season.
