Former Sun Tyson Chandler officially signs with Lakers

Tyson Chandler Josh Hart Ja Vale McGee

An All-Star in the 2012-13 season, the well-traveled Chandler has also played with the Bulls, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the New Orleans Hornets, the Charlotte Bobcats, the Dallas Mavericks (twice) and the New York Knicks before landing in Phoenix for the 2015-16 season.

The Lakers were expected to sign Chandler, who will add some much-needed depth to the team's group of centers. He is eligible to be traded February 6, one day before the trade deadline.

Chandler's contract was bought out by the Suns over the weekend, and he became a free agent.

James, however, doesn't need to play by such rules and spoke glowingly of the possible future addition of Chandler. He is one of the most well-respected veterans in the league and should do wonders for this young Lakers team. "We are thrilled for Tyson to join us as we progress towards our ultimate goals as a team".

"Though the 36-year-old has seen his minutes and production decline after almost two decades in the National Basketball Association, he is still an explosive leaper who feasts on lobs".

Through 10 games, the 4-6 Lakers are giving up 5.7 more points per 100 possessions to opponents when McGee is on the bench than when he's on the court. Chandler was named an All-Star with the New York Knicks in 2012-13 and won an National Basketball Association championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2010-11.

He averaged 6.5 points and 9.1 rebounds in 46 starts for the Suns during the 2017-18 campaign. The rest of their center corps - namely Ivica Zubac and rookie Jonathan Williams - haven't been able to match his impact.
