Hamas Commanders, 6 civilians killed by Israeli forces in Khan Yunis

Rocket-fire from Gaza and Israel air strikes against militant targets have been a regular occurrence.

IDF lieutenant-colonel was killed and another officer was moderately wounded during an IDF special force operation in the Gaza Strip after fire exchanges developed between the force and Palestinian terrorists.

Hamas has led weekly protests since March 30 in an effort to ease an Israeli-Egyptian blockade that was imposed in 2007 in order to weaken the militant group.

Multiple alarm sirens have sounded in the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel near the Gaza border. It was unclear how many were gunmen.

They said the clashes took place east of Khan Younis, in the south of the territory. One of the dead was a local commander for Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, a local hospital reported. He was identified as Nour Baraka.

Israel's army confirmed one soldier was killed and another was injured.

Hamas said the incident began when assailants in a passing auto opened fire on a group of its armed men, killing one of its commanders.

A ground operation inside the Gaza Strip would be rare and likely significantly boost tensions. "In light of the security-related incidents in the South, the prime minister has chose to shorten his visit to Paris and to return to Israel tonight", the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

Netanyahu had earlier defended his decision to allow Qatar to transfer the cash to Gaza despite criticism from within his own government over the move, saying he wanted to avoid a war if it wasn't necessary.

In Israel, the military said it had intercepted two rockets fired from Gaza. Over 170 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the border protests, in which Palestinians throw rocks, burning tires and grenades toward Israeli troops.

Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said all Israeli soldiers involved had returned to Israel. On Friday, Palestinian civil servants began receiving money tranches after months of sporadic salary instalments into the Palestinian enclave through Israel, reportedly in suitcases. The payment was part of $90 million that Qatar has pledged to deliver to cover the salaries of thousands of employees in the Gaza Strip in the next six months. He said the step was coordinated with security officials to restore quiet for Israeli citizens living near the Gaza border and to avert a humanitarian crisis.

The Gulf emirate has also started buying additional fuel for Gaza's sole power station, allowing outages to be reduced to their lowest level in years.
