Hockney painting breaks auction record for living artist

David Hockney painting auctions for record $90M

A painting by the British artist David Hockney has fetched $90.3 million in NY, easily breaking the record for a work by a living artist sold at auction.

Koons, 63, held the title since 2013 when his orange balloon dog sold for US$58.4 million.

It sold following a 10-minute battle between two rival bidders via telephone, after the price passed $70m.

It was standing room only in the packed sales room at Christie's in NY, where a smattering of applause broke out when the sale concluded, the painting hammering for $80 million.

Hockney's sold his painting for $18,000 in 1972.

The artwork depicts two men at a pool with lush mountains in the backdrop.

The 1972 painting by Hockney, now 81, is "the holy grail of his paintings, from both the historical and the market perspectives", Alex Rotter, co-chairman of post-war and contemporary art at Christie's, said in September.

He began a new work that cast his former lover and favourite muse, California artist Peter Schlesinger, as a young man looking down at a swimming figure.

Bradford-born Hockney, 81, was inspired to paint the picture by two photographs he found on his studio floor, one of a swimmer in Hollywood in 1966 and another of a boy staring at an item on the ground.

Hockney's painting was sold at a Christie's auction in NY with the painting having increased in value from the modest $18,000 that Hackney's NY dealer fetched for it in 1972.

The Hockney had been taken on tour to drive up potential buyer interest, in Hong Kong, London and Los Angeles.
