Howell defeats Rodgers in playoff for first win in 11 years

Charles Howell III wins the RSM Classic

The 39-year-old won a playoff at the RSM Classic on Sunday to earn his first PGA Tour victory in 11 years.

Squandering his lead with a bogey-double bogey start, Howell battled back all day for a three-under 67 to match Rodgers, whose 61-62 weekend almost took him to his first PGA title.

By the end of the third round, his lead was down to one shot over PGA Tour rookie Cameron Champ and Jason Gore, who each shot 66 and made up ground on the back nine of the Seaside course at Sea Island. Then to have that chance, to get that fortune, I just thought, 'Just don't leave this one short.

"I knew I had put myself behind the eight ball", he said of his poor start.

Howell closed with a 3-under 67, birdieing Nos.

It was the third career tour win for Howell, whose first came in 2002 at Williamsburg, Virginia. After making the 36-hole cut on the 2-under number, Rodgers shot 61-62 on the weekend. He rallied with six birdies. Both players had birdie looks on the first playoff hole, with Rodgers missing from 27 feet and Howell from 14 feet off the front fringe.

"I fought as hard as I could", said Rodgers, who broke Tiger Woods' scoring record at Stanford and tied his victory record.

Webb Simpson, this year's Players Championship victor, was third in an all-American top 10 on 264 - with Ryan Blaum and Luke List sharing fourth on 265, Cameron Champ sixth on 266 and Chase Wright, Peter Uihlein, Kevin Kisner and two-time Major victor Zach Johnson joint seventh on 267.

"To get to make that birdie putt on 16 was really big".

Compatriot Webb Simpson was a shot further back, while Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell finished tied for 11th.
