III basketball player suspended for ruthlessly elbowing opponent

College basketball player viciously elbows opponent in the face midgame

Nichols' guard Nate Tengalia fired up and hit a wide open corner three, as Fitchburg State's Kewan Platt seemingly lazily jogged out for a half-hearted contest.

The Fitchburg State community is appalled by the conduct displayed during Tuesday night's home basketball game. He is now averaging 24 points, 12.5 boards and 1.5 assists per game.

Platt checked to see if the baseline official was looking and then threw a forearm/elbow at Tenaglia's head. He put up 48 points and 25 rebounds in Fitchburg State's first two games of the season.

It's unclear what provoked Platt because neither Fitchburg State coach Titus Manderson nor athletic department spokeswoman Bettiann Michalik immediately returned messages left by Yahoo Sports. Fitchburg State's previous possession ended with Platt attempting an ill-advised step-back 3-pointer that sailed several feet over the rim, perhaps leaving him frustrated enough to make a poor decision seconds later.

According to Nichols spokesman Pete Divito, Tenaglia had guarded Platt throughout the game, frustrating him with his defense.

Full video of the game confirms that there were no previous physical altercations but does provide a bit more context. He led Fitchburg State scorers with 16 points.

"(Platt) has been indefinitely suspended from the team and barred from campus. The case is being reviewed at the student conduct level for consideration of further sanctions.

Platt was recently honored with the Conference Player of the Week Award. His behavior goes against the MASCAC's mission, which includes good sportsmanship.
