India Was Such a Poor Place: Lewis Hamilton

Speaking amidst the celebrations of Mercedes fifth championship double, the Briton went a little further, suggesting that the sport should be looking at quality as opposed to quantity.

"If you have the German Grand Prix and you've got a grand prix in Berlin, I think connecting to cities where a lot of people are is probably a good thing, not necessarily going to countries where they don't know so much about Formula 1".

"If you had the Silverstone Grand Prix and a London Grand Prix, it would be pretty cool", he added; the former under serious threat and set to disappear from the calendar after 2019 and the latter never realistically likely to happen.

The Mercedes driver had said this week, in discussing new venues like Vietnam, that he would like more grands prix in places with "real racing history" such as Europe and the United States.

Mercedes has enjoyed strong reliability this season with Hamilton yet to face a grid drop through an engine related issue all year, whereas Valtteri Bottas has suffered only one engine related penalty at the Belgian GP. "If it was my business, I'd be trying to do more events in those countries", Hamilton said.

"I've been to Vietnam before and it is attractive", he had told the BBC.

Five times Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has clarified comments about how he had felt torn to be racing in "poor" India during the years when the country hosted a grand prix.

Hamilton won that very Grand Prix in Brazil after the infamous Ocon-Verstappen clash took place but was apparently driving on fumes when it came to the actual power unit. This statement came after Formula One announced the confirmation of the Vietnam Gran Prix. Some pointed out its status as the fastest growing economy in the world, prompting Hamilton to post a response to Instagram on Thursday.

Hamilton questioned the strategy of taking Formula One to places like India, Korea and Turkey where the sport did not survive for long.

However, his comments did not go down well with fans in India and drew their ire on social media. I have visited and always had an unbelievable time however whilst it's the fasted [sic] growing economy it also has a lot of poverty.

"My reference was that a grand prix there felt odd to drive past homeless people and then arrive in a huge arena where money was not an issue", explained Hamilton on Instagram and Twitter.
