McConnell talks bi-partisanship, women candidates after Senate wins

U.S. President Donald Trump arrives for a

If Democrats demand the returns and Mr Trump refuses to release them, it could set off a series of legal challenges, with federal judges being asked to adjudicate the limits of the President's power.

"We're going to see a huge field, but the big question will be whether they learn lessons from the midterms because I think the electorate was trying to tell us something loudly and clearly", Matt Bennett of Third Way, a centrist think tank, said in an interview. "I'm not sure that I should be happy or sad but I feel just fine about it".

The outcome of some of those races are still up in the air.

But historical precedent suggests that an aggressive strategy targeting the president may backfire come 2020. Sen.

It's the most critical swing state in the country.

"It's not like we're going to go drunk-crazy with subpoenas".

The Democrats gained more than the 23 seats they needed for a majority in the 435-seat House of Representatives.

"For those who want impeachment, that's not what our caucus is about", House veteran and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said before her party clinched the majority.

The House speaker is expected to schedule special elections to replace her and state Rep. Sid Michaels Kavulich, D-Lackawanna, who died last month and won without an opponent on the ballot.

Returning to his immigration-heavy 2016 playbook, Trump went on to unleash his full fury on a caravan of migrants slowly making their way to the southern border. The GOP got close in West Virginia, though it's a state Trump won by 42 points. "It's Lean-R", said Matt Isbell, a Florida Democratic data analyst told Politico. "The Florida election map is changing under Trump". Trump won its 20 electoral votes by about 44,000 votes as he toppled Hillary Clinton's "blue wall".

Now, with a Democratic House breathing down his neck, the world should expect more "fire and fury". Pennsylvania GOP strategist Mark Harris admitted "it was a bad night for Republicans across the table".

"The single reason we don't have more women in office is traditionally because not enough women want to run", Dew Steele said.

He took credit for Republicans having "defied history" by consolidating their grip on the Senate. It's unclear how this group of people will affect the 2020 election. She has earned this great honor!,' he tweeted. But even with statewide losses in MI and Wisconsin on Tuesday, he argued there were still encouraging signs for the GOP and Trump in the Midwest.

In Iowa, Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds was elected to a full term, while the Wisconsin GOP held onto the state legislature even as Gov. Scott Walker narrowly lost.

And in a rare moment of practicality, the Republican leader, who is up for re-election in 2020, conceded that one of the GOP's signature efforts - the repeal of "Obamacare" - is all but dead.

Republicans on Tuesday again swept the races for governor and four other state offices. Debbie Stabenow was also re-elected as Democrats flipped two House seats in the suburbs and exurbs.

Mr Trump hailed "tremendous success" and an "incredible day" for his party in Tuesday's elections.

Story of the suburbs. and beyond?

More than 300,000 Americans stand on the brink of receiving health care coverage under Medicaid expansion after this week's midterm election. Many younger House Democrats, including some of the newly elected, have pledged to vote against her.

He tweeted: "If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level".

Democrats have to keep reminding themselves, and America, that they beat Trump and the Republicans in the competition that mattered most.

Mr McConnell said the contentious, partisan fight over US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's nomination was "very helpful" in winning Senate seats, like an "adrenaline shot" for Republican voters.

Both Texas and Georgia could be interesting to watch in the coming presidential cycles. He can now wait for the Democrats to come to him for votes on legislative proposals.

But a measure of how much bigger the overall Democratic House majority could have been is that about two dozen Republicans who won or were leading had similarly narrow margins of five points or fewer.

Fallout on the Republican side of the aisle is just as complicated, with Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California facing a challenge from conservative Rep. Jim Jordan of OH for the top spot in their shrunken ranks.
