The former First Lady, Michelle Obama, is set to drop her memoir Becoming next week and in light of the special release, she paid a visit to Good Morning America to discuss certain details of her novel that she's never shared before.
She said it was at that point she and husband Barack realized: 'We had to do IVF'.
In an interview with Robin Roberts, which aired in part on Good Morning America on Friday, the former first lady said she made a decision to come public with her painful experience to help others who have had to go through a similar situation.
Mrs Obama revealed that the couple's relationship struggled at times, especially after he joined the state legislature, leaving her at home where she was forced to administer IVF shots herself.
That fertility treatment helped the couple conceive daughters Malia, 20, and Sasha, 17. The memoir dives into her thoughts on the current political climate, and specifically on the President who took office after her husband. "She got paid a lot of money to write a book and they always insisted you come up with controversial".
Michelle Obama on her miscarriage 20 years ago: "I think it's important to talk to young mothers about the fact that miscarriages happen".
In some of her most extensive public comments on her White House years, the former first lady also lets her fury fly over President Donald Trump's "bigotry and xenophobia" - dangerous, deliberate rhetoric, she wrote, that risked her family's safety.
Obama also uses her book to speak to the false accusations about her husband - namely the "birther" movement and questions to his patriotism - and how then-civilian Donald Trump egged them on. Mrs. Obama called the accusations bigoted, unsafe and they were "deliberately meant to stir up the wing nuts and kooks". What if that person went looking for our girls?
'If I'd learned anything from the ugliness of the campaign, from the myriad of ways people had sought to write me off as angry or unbecoming, it was that public judgment sweeps in to fill any void, ' she says, adding: 'I knew that I would never allow myself to get that banged up again'.
This cover image released by Crown shows "Becoming", by Michelle Obama, available on November 13. She accused Trump of "stalk [ing]" Clinton during an election debate by following her around the stage, standing near her and "trying to diminish her presence".
And when Trump was elected president, she says she was surprised that so many women would choose a "misogynist" over "an exceptionally qualified female candidate". The full interview airs 9pm Sunday. "I continue to be put off by the nastiness".
