Mookie Betts runs away with American League MVP award

Five ways that Mookie Betts transformed into an MVP this season

Major League Baseball announced on Thursday evening, November 15 that Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich is the 2018 National League Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Betts said he is ready to take the greater exposure the MVP and the Red Sox season will create and embrace it even more to become an ambassador for the game. Trout tied the record of four second-place finishes shared by Stan Musial, Ted Williams and Albert Pujols. Unlike some baseball players, he doesn't eschew off-the-field limelight.

Both batting champions won MVP awards for the first time since San Francisco's Buster Posey and Detroit's Miguel Cabrera in 2012.

It's a credit to Betts that he was able to top yet another MVP-worthy performance from the incomparable Mike Trout, whose perennial excellence is not diminished by the fact that a rotating cast of others has occasionally matched or bettered him.

Betts has two more seasons before he can hit free agency.

The first MVP from the Red Sox since Dustin Pedroia in 2008, Betts tore out of the gate, a big reason the Red Sox jumped out to a 17-2 start. "Luckily for myself, it all went unbelievable".

Acquired from the payroll-paring Miami Marlins about a month before spring training, the 26-year-old Yelich won the first batting title in Brewers history with a.326 average.

"Right now, just focused on 2019 season coming up", Betts said. He also had 47 doubles, five triples, 129 runs and 80 RBIs, and his 1.078 OPS was second in Major League Baseball behind only Trout (1.088). Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman finished fourth with 174, and the other first-place vote went to New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom, the NL Cy Young Award victor, who finished fifth.

Yelich narrowly missed winning the NL Triple Crown as he finished just two homers back of Nolan Arenado and one RBI shy of Javier Baez. Yelich was especially impressive in the second half, hitting.367 with 25 homers and 67 RBIs - including 11 homers in August and 10 in September.

The Brewers made it to the NL Championship Series behind the bat of Yelich, falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games.

Yelich celebrated in Southern California with family and friends, including Heisman Trophy victor and Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.
