Northern Irish businesses put pressure on DUP by backing Brexit deal

Irish PM Does Not See Much Room for Brexit Deal Renegotiation

"While by no means ideal, it provides a platform to move onto the critical next stage of a comprehensive future trade deal", said a joint statement from the Confederation of British Industry Northern Ireland, Federation of Small Businesses, Institute of Directors and Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce.

Political commentator Noel Whelan said in the event of a no deal, and despite the economic fallout, he thinks the Irish people "will be forgiving" of the taoiseach, who he said "did an incredible job getting what the Irish government wanted into the agreement".

"A United Kingdom wide solution that avoids a hard border and allows Northern Irish firms frictionless access to markets in Britain, Republic of Ireland, and the European Union offers our members the best chance of surviving in a post-Brexit world", he added.

Mr Varadkar, who described the news of the cabinet backing the draft agreement as "one of the better days in politics", said he thought people had underestimated the "mettle and courage" of Theresa May.

But after widespread opposition to a withdrawal agreement unveiled by British Prime Minister Theresa May this week sharply increased the likelihood of a so-called "no-deal" Brexit, Leo Varadkar said he might not have a choice.

"None of them solve the Irish border question".

The prime minister is expected to be grilled by MPs later over the draft deal.

May has pledged to see her Brexit plan through, despite ministerial resignations and a plan to topple her by disgruntled Conservative lawmakers opposed to major elements of the deal.

"I think it is very hard to start making amendments without everyone wanting to make amendments and you could see the whole thing unravel", he said.

As a result of the uncertainty the Irish stock market dropped more than any other main exchange in Western Europe, with Ireland's economy most exposed to the fallout from a no deal Brexit.

He added: "We must be clear on the fact that a no-deal outcome would be disastrous for Northern Ireland, particularly for the agri-food sector".

"We would find ourselves after a very chaotic opening period having to agree something, having to agree something around aligning regulations and customs", he said.
