Officials confirm new viral case amid outbreak

2nd pediatric facility in New Jersey hit by viral outbreak

Health officials say a 10th patient has died from an infection at a pediatric care facility in New Jersey as a different strain of the virus has been found at another facility in the state.

"To date, the individuals associated with the outbreak became ill between September 26 and October 29", it said.

State health officials have said the outbreak can only be declared over once four weeks pass without an additional case.

The child had been a resident of the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell.

Those who died at the facility range in age from toddlers to young adults, New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal told reporters. While they typically cause mild illnesses, people with weakened immune systems or existing respiratory or cardiac disease are at higher risk of developing a severe illness.

Poulos's daughter, who had required breathing and feeding tubes as part of her normal care, was transferred to another hospital with a fever but was later transferred back to the Wanaque facility, where she died last week.

New Jersey Health officials previously said Wanaque was cited in 2016 and 2017 for washing deficiencies, improper storage of syringes, failure to disinfect surfaces and other issues.

According to a Patch report, Assemblywoman Schepisi will introduce legislation that would require facilities to notify patients' families within 24 hours of an outbreak or other health emergencies.

"The vast majority are under age 18".

However, on Tuesday the department said in a statement that an unannounced inspection October 21 found that "the facility had deficiencies that did not indicate substandard care was delivered".

Elnahal had earlier said all the cases of the outbreak occurred in a respiratory, or ventilator, unit. "But we are working with the CDC on this ongoing outbreak investigation".

"As a parent and as a legislator, I am absolutely horrified by the details that have emerged surrounding the viral outbreak at the Wanaque Center", said Assemblywoman Joann Downey, D-11th District and chair of the Human Services Committee, in a statement.

The department says 27 cases have been associated with the respiratory virus at the centre. Some strains also cause diarrhea and conjunctivitis. State health investigators said the outbreak does not pose a lethal threat to infected patients.
