One killed in Melbourne knife rampage terror attack

One dead, two injured, in Melbourne stabbing incident

A auto was seen burning on the northern strip of Bourke Street near the Target store, and a man was shot by police after an alleged stabbing, according to the Age.

Police had been called to the auto at 4.20pm Friday, local time, by which time the man had already started attacking bystanders.

Police shot a knife-wielding man after he fatally stabbed one person and injured two others in the centre of Australia's second-largest city.

The man, who was originally from Somalia, was known to the police and the incident is being treated as terrorism, Victoria state police Commissioner Graham Ashton said.

The area has been cordoned off and people have been asked to avoid the area.

"One person has been taken to hospital with a neck injury".

A man can be seen approaching two police officers with what appears to be a knife and attempts to stab them.

Speaking at the scene, Superintendent David Clayton said: "Police quickly responded to the incident". Police are not looking for anyone further at this early stage.

"I don't know what the police were doing, for a good two to three minutes they were trying to grab him, tackle him down when a lot of people were screaming". The man, who was shot in the chest by police has died in hospital, police have said.

"At the same time, passers-by were calling out that members of the public had been stabbed". One died in the hospital, Ashton said.

"There was a massive flame and bang, just smoke and lots of people", witness Shelley Reid told Nine News.

"They were around him trying to take the knife out of his hand - I'm pretty sure it was a kitchen knife", he said.

"It's the center of Melbourne, where a lot of the transportation changes over.it's probably the busiest part of Melbourne and late on a Friday", said Meegan May who witnessed part incident from a nearby tram.

Officers implored anybody with footage of the incident to share it to the Victoria Police Facebook page or attend the Melbourne West Police Station to provide a witness statement.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack and authorities say they are investigating it as an act of terrorism.
