The killer was identified as Ian David Long, a 28-year-old former USA marine with mental health issues, with investigators trying to find the motive for the attack at a venue hosting a country music evening for students.

He attained the rank of corporal and saw combat while deployed in Afghanistan from November 2010 to June 2011.

The sheriff said Long is believed to have killed himself after opening fire on the crowd.

Witnesses told CNN the attacker had a large handgun, wore a black trench coat and glasses and threw smoke grenades inside bar. Investigators are working out the details of what transpired, Dean added.

Dean said his department had several previous contacts with Long, a former US Marine, including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally.

"They called out our crisis intervention team, our mental health specialists who met with him, talked to him, and cleared him".

Authorities are expected to release the names of the victims later Thursday as police provided updates on the investigation.

He said the motive of the shooting and the identity of the shooter were not known.
