PGA Tour: Matt Jones one back in Mexico

Kuchar was at 14-under 128 as he tries to end more than four years without a PGA Tour victory.

When Zach Johnson's caddie had to tap out of a round due to dehydration, his playing partner Matt Kuchar had quite the suggestion for a replacement.

Champ, going for his second victory this season, played in the morning and had a 62 with a bogey on his final hole.

A crowded field piled up behind Kuchar, Hickok and Bozzelli, meanwhile, with a huge 15-way tie for fourth just one shot back at six under.

Kuchar missed only two fairways at El Camaleon Golf Club, key to good scoring, and kept bogeys off his card for a 7-under 64 that gave him a share of the lead with Dominic Bozzelli and PGA Tour rookie Kramer Hickok.

Two weeks after winning the Sanderson Farms Championship in MS, he worked on a few tweaks in his swing and was in full control of where the ball was going.

"I knew Sybi was in the crowd, I knew she had caddied for me before and was friendly with Zach Johnson, and figured she would be good to handle it, and Zach would go easy on her".

Kuchar birdied five straight on the front nine and picked up three more birdies coming in to offset his only bogey of the day at the par-four 12th, where his tee shot found the bushes before he limited the damage with a long bogey putt.

Champ - already a victor on the PGA Tour season - had set the early clubhouse target after firing a round-of-the-day 62, with defending champion Patton Kizzire one of six players a further shot back in tied-third.

After an even par 71 on Thursday he had four birdies and two bogeys in a two-under 69 that wasn't enough to see him through to the weekend.

"If you're not driving it well, this course is extremely hard", Kuchar said.

Seven players are at 11 under, including defending champion Patton Kizzire, past Mayakoba champion Brian Gay and Anirban Lahiri of India, who's played in the last two Presidents Cups, and New Zealand's Danny Lee.

SHORT SHOTS: Jordan Spieth missed the cut at 2 under a week after finishing T-55 in Las Vegas.

Park Sung Hyun shot a 67 and fellow South Korean Kim Sei Young had a 68 to put them both within five strokes of the lead.
