Prince Harry reveals why Charles walked Meghan up the aisle

The Queen dances with President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana during her visit to Accra Ghana in 1961 More

"So, of course, you know, I understand entirely how that should operate".

During the ceremony, as Charles led Meghan down the aisle at St George's Chapel, the prince was seen whispering, "Thank you, Pa".

Mystery surrounds the departure of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, from her latest royal tour with Prince Charles.

But he told the BBC in a documentary marking his 70th birthday next week that he did not intend to be a meddling king.

'But I've always been intrigued, if it's meddling to worry about the inner cities as I did 40 years ago and what was happening or not happening there - the conditions in which people were living.

Besides being president of The Prince's Trust and the Royal Shakespeare Company, he is also president or patron of more than 400 charitable organizations, and is particularly focused on conservation, the environment and young people.

"As you can perhaps imagine, after very almost forty years of, as it were, "painting a picture" on what was then a totally blank canvas of a garden, it all means a great deal to me now", the Prince explained.

Charles's wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, says: "That was very touching. But that's how he gets things done, he's driven by this, this passion inside him to really help".

'I want to be able to take risks, so that if it didn't work it didn't work.

In the hour-long film, the Duke of Cambridge said he would like his father to spend more time with his grandchildren - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. "Needless to say, it is fascinating to watch new generations of children responding exactly as I had hoped, and in the same way I did".

"For him that's a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he's our father so of course he's going to be there for us. I suspect quite a few of you may too have grandchildren or will do soon", he said, according to the Telegraph.

Prince William talks about wanting his father to spend more time with his grandchildren saying: "Now he's reached his seventieth year it's a flawless time to consolidate a little bit 'cause as most families would do, you are anxious about having them around and making sure their health's okay, and he's the fittest man I know but equally I want him to be fit until he's 95 you know going on".

Prince, Son And Heir: Charles At 70 will be screened on Thursday at 9pm on BBC One.
